MLA+, the international arm of Maccreanor Lavington Architects, has won two competitions for new residential neighbourhoods in China and Russia respectively.

The company was selected by China’s biggest residential developer, Vanke China, to design a 150,000sqm scheme in Shenzhen. The project is part of the wider regeneration area of Liuxiandong, a former peripheral industrial site now located in the city’s central areas that are being developed as a result of rapid growth.

The project will focus on small residential units for a wide array of target groups ranging from professional single occupiers to assisted living for the elderly. The high density scheme is augmented by extensive community infrastructure aimed at generating a cohesive neighbourhood. Medical facilities, day-care, sports provision, cultural space for art and performance, social gathering spaces, quiet gardens and busy squares form a lively and urban mix.

In Moscow, MLA+ will design a new residential quarter of 4,000 homes along the banks of the Moskva River for PSN Group. The site is a former logistics and warehousing area within the city fringe, and is part of a recent emphasis in the city on brownfield development. The new neighbourhood will include a kindergarten, school, sports centre and retail which are also to be designed by the practice, as well as substantial office provision.

Development for both projects will begin in the New Year and construction will begin on site in 2016.

MLA+ have been steadily growing since they set up three years ago, with offices in Shanghai, St Petersburg and Rio de Janeiro. Two residential towers are already under construction in Chengdu, China, and there have been a number of competition wins for large scale city master plans and public space. These two new acquisitions mark another significant step in the company’s development and build on the extensive residential experience of Maccreanor Lavington within the UK and the Netherlands, as well as the local market expertise of its senior staff.

MLA+ is the internationally operating arm of Maccreanor Lavington Architects. Founded by Gerard Maccreanor, Richard Lavington and Markus Appenzeller, the office is active in the fields of architecture, planning, urban development related consultancy services.
